Facing the Mighty Oaks on 15 Feb
In was our final game against the Oakville Rangers; the only question was could Corey's Tree Cutter Minor PeeWee Highlanders befall the might Oaks. The game did not start well as Grey Bruce took a penalty at the one-minute mark of the first period. With lots of energy and good positional play and fantastic saves by goaltender Matthew Donnelly, the score remained deadlocked at zero. After exchanging chances at both end of the ice, Oakville finally got on the scoreboard at 5:35 of the first period, which is how the period ended.
In the second period both teams exchanged penalties and scoring chances but at 4:41 of the second, Oakville managed their second goal of the game. It looked like the Highlanders were going to get on the board when Riley Torrie snuck in from the point and received a beautiful pass from Tyson Lina only to have it just miss the net. At 3:35 and then 10 seconds later, Oakville sealed the Highlanders fate with 2 quick goals 10 seconds apart and it was an up hill battle from there. Finally with under 3 minutes to go in the second, Will Black scored to help close the gap seeing the period end 4-1.
The third period started with an early goal by Oakville at the 14:34 mark. Things were looking like a possible rout but credit to the Grey Bruce Minor PeeWees, they hung tough. Thanks to some great goaltending and hard work, Grey Bruce shut the door the rest of the way. Unfortunately, the damage was done. 4 goals in 5 minutes by the Oakville Rangers was the story of the game.
Corey's Tree Cutter Minor PeeWee Highlanders will have to befall The Mighty Oaks another day!
