SCTA Qualifier
Game 1 SCTA Playdowns

On Friday March 15th the Power Workers’ Union Minor PeeWee team took on the mighty flying Eagles of Burlington. The determined Highlanders of Grey Bruce came with their game face on and ready to leave it all on the line, as they knew the accumulation of all this year’s games and hard work at practices all comes down to this weekend

In the first period, the Highlanders gave the Eagles all they could handle with solid and swift fore checks led by Tyson Lina , many timely and solid body checks and two big hits by Riley Torrie and Will Black, some great pinches from the defense and quick passing left the eagles scrambling and trying regroup against this unexpected aggressive Highlander team. The first period was one of the best played this year as the boys brought their best.

The second period the Eagles would deflate the Highlanders play and change the momentum with a power play marker at 10:26. They would score another on a breakaway at 9:02 on Matthew Donnelly who played a spectacular game making many great saves but unable to foil this breakaway. The period would end 2-0.

In the third the Eagles would score on a scramble in front of Matthew and then would catch the defence backing up and score 15 seconds later with a top corner marker. They would score another on a nice passing play during a 3 on 1 and then notch one more making the final 6-0.

Game 2 Vs Brampton 45’s

The second game Corey’s Tree Cutting Minor PeeWee Highlanders would tackle the Brampton 45’s during a 1 pm start. The first period our Highlanders played strong again with many opportunities and some movement of the puck creating puck position and control. Cam Lightfoot would score and draw first blood on a nice slapper finding the five hole assisted by Nathan Ahrens and Dawson Fahrer. Unable to maintain the 1-0 lead, the 45’s would find the back of the twine ending the first period in a 1-1 draw.

In the second Brampton would get one by the fabulous goaltending of Brayden Kelso who was called upon to make save after save, this tally would make the score 2-1. The Highlanders would battle to try to tie the game with honourable mentions going to Riley Torrie who was leading the battle with every breath he took, in the physical aspect, in front of the net, along the boards, and in the corners, letting the 45’s know they were in a fight. Unfortunately, we were unable to find the mark and the game ended in a 2-1 loss. Knowing this team, tomorrow we will see the boys turn things around and with some unselfish solid team work, I would suspect there could be an upset in the making.
