Central Ontario Wolves Cup Classic 2013 Tournament (Day 2)
Taming the Wolves

It was a chilly morning and the ride from Peterborough to Lindsay was quiet with thoughts of taming the Wolves this morning. Corey’s Tree Cutting Minor PeeWee Highlanders had a rough start the previous day at the Central Ontario Wolves AAA Cup Classic 2013, but had different plans for Sudbury on this Saturday morning. The boys came out with intensity and speed to start the 1st period off. Less than 2 minutes in to the period our aggressive play resulted in the Highlander getting penalized for a questionable call on Dawson Fahrer for head contact. The penalty kill unit staved off the attacking Wolves with relative ease. Half way the through the 1st the Sudbury PeeWee’s found themselves short-handed.

The Highlanders wasted no time in capitalizing when only 16 seconds into the Wolves penalty Will Black found the back of the net on a nifty wrister with Nathan Ahrens adding the helper. Two minutes left in the first Jonny Pickett was sent to the sin bin for cross checking. With the face off in the Highlanders zone the Wolves did an unconventional move and pulled their goalie to allow for a 6 on 4. This move however didn’t pay off as Mark Aljoe won the face draw over to Sammy Bye who passed it back to Aljoe who back handed it the length of the ice to put the Highlanders up 2-0.

The 2nd period sees the Highlanders with lots of back and forth play maintaining good intensity. The Highlanders continue to have the penalty kill unit doing their best and not allowing the Wolves and Matthew Donnelly coming up big with a glove save to keep the goose egg up on the board. As the 2nd period winds down the Sudbury PeeWee’s find themselves once again in penalty trouble.

The start of the 3rd the Grey Bruce squad puts out five forwards to try and open up the scoring and take advantage on the power play. This tactic has paid off in the past yet this time they came up a little short. However, less than 3 minutes in we managed to increase the lead when Josh Lorenz popped one by the Wolves net minder with Mark Aljoe and Jonny Pickett picking up assists. Shortly, after the Highlanders 3rd goal they are awarded a penalty shot when a Sudbury defender places his hand over the puck when the pucks in the crease. Will Black’s number was called to take the shot. As he zigged and zagged down looking for an opening he spotted the top shelve when he let a high flyer go that just whistled over the crossbar. The Highlanders continue to play hard and awarded with a short-handed goal by Cam Lightfoot. This still wasn’t enough when for the boys they still wanted to fill the net when Mark Aljoe made it 5 goals with Jonny Pickett and Jordon Ferrier getting the assists. With Matthew Donnelly’s stellar play he was able to preserve his shut out. It was obvious that the boys came to win and it was a great overall effort for the Highlanders.

Highlanders Come Up Short

After a celebratory team meal at Boston Pizza the Power Workers’ Union Minor PeeWee Highlanders were set to face-off against the Timmins Trademark North Stars. About the half way mark the North Stars are on the board first. That’s the only goal in the 1st.

The start of the 2nd the Highlanders go on a power play. Controlling the play in the Timmins zone and getting 4 shots on the power play the North Stars goalie is tough to figure out and the Highlander are unable to capitalize. The crowd cheered as the boys got a goal to close the gap but it is denied by the ref with an early whistle. The 2nd ends with the Timmins squad up by two.

Early into the 3rd Nathan Ahrens is able to figure out the North Stars net minder and with a scuffle in front of the net he slides one in with Cam Lightfoot getting the assist. The Timmins team get a couple more goals with one being questionable whether or not it crossed the goal line but in the end the official called it a goal. Brayden Kelso made some key saves to keep the Highlanders within striking distance. Good effort by our Grey Bruce boys.
