Curtain Falls on Minor Bantam Season

Last year’s OMHA silver medalists hit the ice way back in August with one goal on their mind. Gold. Expectations were high after a memorable Major Pee Wee year. The team had flashes of being brilliant throughout the year. And at other times you wondered what the heck was going on. It was an up and down regular season and the tournaments were tough. But it really all comes down to the playoff weekend.

So, the Minor Bantams hit the road and headed down to the honeymoon capital of the world to do battle at the SCTA playdowns. Four round robin games to start and common sense told you that 3 wins were needed to advance to the Sunday final.

Game 1. Halton Hurricanes, arguably the most improved team this year would be up first. GBH record against HH this year was 1-2-1. Almost a must win you could say. Good solid hockey by the good guys resulted in a well earned 2-0 win.
Game 2. Oakville Rangers. GBH record this season was 1-2-1. Feeling good about the morning game, the boys hit the ice ready to rock and roll. And rock and roll they did scoring early and often as they cruised to a 6-1 victory. Game 3. The home team, Niagara Rivermen. GBH1-2-1 record against. A win here would surely guarantee a Sunday game. Unfortunately the Highlanders could not solve the Niagara goalie and fell to a 2-0 defeat.
Game 4. Buffalo Regals. 1-3 record against them this year. Crunch time, gotta win to live another day. Could they do it, you bet, and despite a few ugly incidents on the ice brought on by the Regals the boys would punch their ticket to the final on Sunday with a 4-2 win.
Game 5. Hamilton Bulldogs, GBH record against was 1-3. It would not be until Saturday night when this opponent was crowned the winner of their pool. Didn’t matter who it was, to continue the quest for Gold this had to be a win. Great game, bad result. This game was as even as you would expect but a late empty netter by the Bulldogs to make it 3-1 would snuff out a return to the OMHA’s for Grey Bruce. Exhausted and disappointed the players skated off to the dressing room one last time.

In one short weekend it was the thrill of victory, followed by the agony of defeat. But at the end of the day, was the product on the ice exciting to watch? Were the hotel parties worthy of an award? Are we all looking forward to next season already? You "butter" believe it baby. Special thank you to our coach of three years, Tom Sguigna. Tom has instilled hockey skills and a respect for the game on these kids that is evident every time they hit the ice. His dedication and passion for the game is second to none. Tom leaves behind a better group of kids and a few dented garbage cans. We wish him well with his new team. They will be lucky to have him. See ya’ll next year. Tom.jpg
