Whitby Silver Stick Wrap Up
Written by:  The Trainer

Last year your Scandinave Grey-Bruce Highlanders were an awesome tournament team. Taking home 3 trophies and winning the SCTA the boys seemed to be flying high and never lost a game in tournament play. The Silver stick would feature better teams and everyone was anxious to see how the boys would measure up. How would they do?

Whitby Silver Stick was the first tourney of the year and a chance to play against the best teams in North America. The team travelled down Thursday night for an early Friday game. Never again will this writer complain about the slow Mennonite Sunday church caravan holding him up as some of us were backed up on the 401 for hours. At 9:45 am Friday the team took to the ice to face their first opponent, Detroit Honeybaked. The boys came out like an inferno, and were actually taking it to Honeybaked for two periods and had the better chances. The third period saw the inferno reduced to a small flame and when the buzzer sounded to end the game it was a 4-0 loss. Next up was L.A Jr. Kings with their purple uniforms and a 9 pm start. Again, the Red and White showed early promise but it wasn’t enough and this one finished as a 5-3 loss.

Saturday would feature two games at more reasonable times. First up was the GTHL’s Toronto Titans at 1pm. This was a good physical tilt that was more or less evenly played and that’s how it ended, at a 2-2 tie. With hopes of playing on Sunday now out of reach the Highlanders strapped on the skates for their final 7:30 pm game against Clarington. Looking to finish off on a high note the team was ready to go but the Toros were a big team and seemed to control the puck for most of this game. So much for a high note as GBH was singing soprano on route to a 7-3 loss. Since it was now too late to drive home the team retired back to the "Hilton" to conduct the post mortem on this first tournament.

4 games played, 1 point. What the &$#* happened? Was the competition that much better? Yes it was , but not overly. The 4 teams we played were definitely not pushovers but with a Highlander team firing on all cylinders I would count on at least two and probably three solid wins. Anyways, the team can’t look back now with a busy weekend ahead with 3 league games to get ready for. Will they be fired up after a not so great tourney?

They better be!

Next Game: Sat Dec 7 vs Buffalo Regals 12pm and 6pm.
