A Competitive Weekend Home and Away
Written by Leanne West.

The Biermans Bantams had a disappointing loss to the Burlington Eagles Saturday on home ice outshooting the Eagles 28-25 with Tristen Lewis (Saugeen Shores) playing well between the pipes….

The Eagles would take a 2 goal lead in the first capitalizing on some unfortunate Highlanders breakdowns. But not for long as the Grey Bruce boys would dig deep to turn things around. Nice puck movement D to D from Tyler Sutter (Chatsworth) to Alec Tiley (Shallow Lake) would assist Justin Donnelly (Pinkerton) on goal #1. Donnelly would pot goal #2 at the end of the first on a pass to the front of the net from behind the net-minder by Brent West (Shallow Lake). Heading into the second the Eagles would take flight and take a one goal lead but not for long as Jordan Caskenette (Owen Sound) would find the top corner of the twine from the hash mark on some nice heads up puck control and movement from defenseman Jasper Akiwenzie (Owen Sound) and Donnelly. The end of the second would see the Eagles take two more to create a 5-3 difference. An intermission break would give the Highlanders time to re-group and that they did. The third period would see the boys outshoot the Eagles 15-4.  With a hot Eagle tender, the Highlanders would only reap the rewards of one more goal, as West would backhand a 4th goal in, on a give and go down low with line-mate Donnelly. The game would end with a 5-4 Highlander loss, but the boys would plan to take their intensity to Brampton on Sunday to visit their hosts the Halton Hurricanes.

An exciting game it was on Sunday, as the Biermans squad held the Hurricanes tight until the end. Jason Goes (Cookstown) would save 29 shots for his team. The first period wouldn't see any change on the score clock as both teams would play tight in both ends. The Hurricanes would be the first to strike taking a 1-0 lead in the second. Coming back hard, the Grey Bruce boys would tie things up, as Brent West would backhand a high shot into the mesh, from the behind the net battling of Justin Donnelly and Jordan Caskenette. As the see-saw game would have it, Halton would once again take a lead. Taking the puck into the Hurricane end on a Highlander power play, Justin McCrae (Owen Sound) would make no hesitation and take advantage of a Hayden Duplantis (Saugeen Shores) rebound made on a pass from Braeden Marshall (Dundalk) to tie up once again. Not letting up, the Biermans boys would take a 3-2 lead as West would take a pass from defenseman Alec Tiley (Owen Sound) in the neutral zone, and find the top corner of the net on the short side. Making yet another two dents, Halton would tie it up and take a lead. Not ready to throw the towel in yet, West would put the puck in deep and some hard work down low from Devin Perdue (Hanover) would create opportunity for an eager Donnelly to find the back of the net to tie the game once more. With a tie game looming, Halton would take advantage of a Hurricane power play and seal the deal with 1:33 remaining finishing the score at 5-4.

The Bantams will travel to Hamilton next weekend to compete in the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs Reebok Classic tournament. Keep working hard boys…..
