The start of the regular 2013/2014 season began in downtown Ayton with your Scandinave Grey Bruce Minor Bantams squaring off against the Niagara North squad for some doubleheader action. Due to injuries and a suspension or two Grey Bruce had to make do with a short bench.
The first game was evenly played, equal shots and chances but unfortunately the final score showed 3 for the visitors and a goose egg for the home team.
Believe it or not, the Highlander roster was down by two more going into the second game as the injury bug chomped down on two more players in game 1. There were almost as many players watching the game from the front row as there were players on the ice. The team showed a lot of heart as all were double shifted on and off all game. The defense did a superb job of keeping the Niagara team out of the scoring lanes and regulating them to low percentage perimeter shots. St.Catherines got the early goal but a shot from the slot by Kent Ribey evened the score. Assist went to Zach Trott. Despite only ten skaters the Highlanders kept pace in the third but an opportunistic goal by Niagara gave them the lead. Grey Bruce battled on and on and it looked like the game would end up tied as the Red and White cashed in on a goal mouth scramble at the buzzer. However, the refs huddled together for a conference and decided it went in after the bell and waved it off.
The Highlanders hope to get a few players back from the infirmary this week and start preparing for next weekends matchups.
Next Game: Saturday Sept.27-Grey Bruce Highlanders vs. Hamilton Bulldogs
