Atoms wow a hometown crowd against the Storm
Written by Lori Adams
The Highlanders met up with the Guelph Storm in Flesherton
Saturday afternoon for the Highlanders first league game of the season. The Highlanders boys came out strong
from the drop of the puck and never looked back!
Jaeden French (Collingwood) took a great pass from Wyatt Steen (Dundalk) and headed down the ice to start the scoring. Late in the first Aiden Ferrier (Durham) took a shot from the blue line to make it a two nothing lead, however, Guelph squeezed one past Goaltender Ryan Wheeler (Kindardine) with only a few seconds left in the first.
The second period started with Mason Watt (Collingwood) moving the play with Patrick Brown (Mount Forest) and Ray Hou (Port Elgin) and netting number three. With the team playing hard, Travis Verbeek (Flesherton) took off up the ice for number four of the period. Hou assisted by Spencer Maddock (Owen Sound) potted number five. Brown, Verbeek and Matthew Grootendorst (Flesherton) passed that puck around the Guelph team until number six was buried! And this is only the end of the second period! French assisted by Watt put another between the pipes and Ryan Colquhoun (Hanover) buried one with just over a minute left in the game to finish with an 8-1 win! Members of the team not mentioned above, who also helped make this a huge victory are Carson Yost (Chatsworth), Will Adams (Meaford), Calvin Stewart (Chatsworth), Austin Waite (Chatsworth) and Jack Dupont (Collingwood).
Thanks to our other goaltender Glenn Crandall (Dundalk) pumping up the guys from the sidelines this game. The guys pelleted the Guelph goalie the entire game and he did a great job saving as many as he did. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to come to Flesherton to cheer on the team!! They were really impressed by the large crowd!!
Off to Rochester, NY on Thursday for a weekend tournament, good luck guys!!
