Due to a bumper U.S crop, corn prices are down, soybean prices are modestly higher on strong China demand, lean hogs settled lower on a record slaughter for the month and
after a silver medal at the Bantam Icefest, the Grey Bruce Highlanders stock is up, way up.
The Bantam Grey Bruce Highlanders traveled to beautiful Peterborough Ontario to try their luck at a tournament. And luck had nothing to do with the results. It was hard work , tenacity and sacrifice. 7 games were played that weekend. First up was Oshawa Generals and they were sent marching after a 9-0 drubbing. Ottawa Senators got the bounces and a 3-1 win. Cambridge Hawks had their wings clipped on the way to an 11-2 rout. Saginaw JR spirit played a good game but left in a bad mood after losing 2-1. North Bay Trappers came up empty 3-1. A French speaking College Charles Lemoyne cried ‘sacre bleu’ on the way out of the arena after losing a tight one 2-1.
Then there was the final on a late Sunday afternoon. Despite having 4 key players on the shelf for this weekend the team was ready to play, but would they have any gas left in the tank? Clarington Toros jumped to 4-1 lead only to see that evaporate after a heroic 3rd period comeback by the good guys to tie the game. Unfortunately, Clarington would score late in the game and add an empty netter to make it a 6-4 final. GBH would settle for Silver.
The Highlanders have a light schedule for the next two weeks until they travel up to Sudbury for the Big Nickel tournament. A full squad should be dressed and itching for battle at that time. Is a Gold medal in the cards? I wouldn’t bet against it.
