Atoms Back in Win Column After Battle With '45's
The Chapman’s Ice Cream Atom Highlanders took the 410 to Brampton for their fourth and final meeting of the regular season with the 45’s. With the 45’s up 2 games to 1 in regular season play, the Highlander Warriors were eager to even things up.

The Highlanders started the game strong with some physical play, but that physical play put them down two men with just a minute into the game. It was an odd call by the ref… but I’m sure there would be more of that on this afternoon. The 45’s opened the 5 on 3 with some puck movement in the Highlanders end zone. As they zeroed in on the Highlander net one of the 45’s got a little too close to Highlander goalie Caden Prues creating a little interference as he tipped it into the net. The ref was quick to wave it off keeping the game scoreless. Soon after that the 45’s would be assessed a penalty of their own…. o.k. we are all even again. The Highlanders would then take the play to the 45’s with some great defensive puck movement by the Highlander’s Vandolder, Coghlin, Wall, Dupont, Woods, Stauffer and Black. With four minutes left in the first Alex Crowley would make a great neutral zone cross ice pass to Liam Colhoun who would take it into the 45’s zone and feed a pass out front where it went off the 45’s goalie and right onto the stick of Sam Shakes who made no mistake by banging it home for a 1-0 lead. That battle would continue through the first but the score would end with the Highlanders up 1-0.

The two teams continued to battle hard through the second period. The Highlanders ran into penalty trouble late in the second and after a string of Highlander penalties the 45’s would catch a break by banging home a rebound to tie the game on the power play and with just over a minute left in the period. The score would remain tied at 1 to end the second.

With these two teams playing tough through the first two periods, fans on both sides were in for an exciting finish. As expected the battle ensued to start the third and the Highlander forwards of Rahn, Leblanc, Krueger, Goldie, Mikaczo, Naves, Shakes, Colhoun and Crowley playing a strong forecheck to keep the 45’s pinned in their end. Eric Black would also jump into the play with a couple of defensive rushes of his own. The 45’s found themselves with penalty problems in the third but the Highlanders were unable to capitalize. With just under five minutes to play some hard work around the net left a loose puck out front of the Brampton goalie where Jaden Goldie would pick it up and put in the open net for a 2-1 Highlanders lead. The Highlanders didn’t stop there and with just over two minutes to play a hard working Sam Shakes would pick up the puck in the offensive zone, drive the net and bury a hard wrister between the legs of the Brampton goalie for his second of the game and a 3-1 Highlander lead. Brampton wasn’t about to give up and with their goalie pulled their speedy center moved the puck down the sideboards and into the Highlander zone and put a wrister in the top corner. The Highlanders would tie the Brampton players up for the final 30 seconds of play and secure a 3-2 win and even out the season series at two games apiece.

Great game boys! Another 2 points! Keep up the hard work, only a few games left before the playoffs.
