Win for the Highlanders.
Written by Tom Macham
And they’re off...the horses are out of the gate and another regular season of Highlander hockey has begun. So begins the cheering for our team (questioning the refs calls), the long beautiful drives to Welland and Niagara Falls (cursing the gas bills), and the unexpected purchase of new skates after your “beautiful little babies” feet have gone up a whole size in less than a month….so it goes with 13 year old boys. I won’t even touch on the growing number of “puck bunnies” or “hockey honeys”, or whatever they call them these days, that seem to be increasing in number at the games - I’ll save that for a later date.
The 98’s got off to a good start on Saturday at the Appleby Ice Centre vs. The Burlington Eagles. The final score was 4 - 1 Highlanders with the main reason being an outstanding effort from Tristan Lewis between the pipes. Lewis made several outstanding stops en-route to a 23 save performance. Highlander goals came from Caskenette assisted by Acheson and Tiley. Eric Langridge scored the second Grey Bruce goal with an absolute rocket from the point. Jacob Wilson increased the Highlander lead with a nice deflection on a point shot by Tiley assisted as well by Donnelly. McCrae sealed the deal with an empty netter with little time left on the clock. Tristan Rajendra went down early in the game with an upper body injury - heal up quick Tristan - we need you back winning those face-offs.
Sunday saw the newly named Welland Tigers visit Ayton. Now called the Southern Tier Admirals and drawing from a larger area of course and with a revamped lineup from last year’s squad. They proved to be a formidable opponent – the fast skating and hard hitting club outshot Grey Bruce 23 - 14 en-route to a 6 - 1 victory. Our boys never quit though forcing the Admiral goaltender into making several quality saves. Caskenette broke his bid for a shut-out late in the third on a breakaway - going top-shelf on a backhand to notch his seventh goal of the campaign with Donnelly and Reaman assisting. Up next are the Halton Hurricanes for a doubleheader on October 1st in Flesherton. See you at the rink.
