Lougheed reflects on his journey with the Highlanders
When Marcus Lougheed heard his name called at the OHL Draft in 2021, it marked the realization of a dream and a moment of gratitude.

“Being drafted to the OHL was an amazing experience,” Lougheed said. “My parents and coaches dedicated so much time to my career and getting that opportunity was an honour. I took extra pride coming from the Highlanders and wanted to represent the organization well.”

Lougheed’s journey through the Grey Bruce Highlanders program helped shape not only his game but also his character.

“I was lucky to play for the Highlanders when I was younger. My coaches prioritized being a good person first, and that is something that has helped me in my hockey career and life,” he said. “As far as hockey development, I felt like I left a more mature player and my skills had improved so much. It was a great spot to develop.”

One lesson in particular has stayed with him and continues to guide him today: You can control two things, your attitude and your effort. “It’s something I remind myself of in many different situations,” Lougheed explained. “It truly keeps me focused and grounded.”

During his time in the program, Lougheed says one of his biggest influences was Coach Graham Melbourne. “He taught me many lessons in hockey and in life, and I feel that he truly set me up for success in junior hockey.”

Now competing in the BCHL, Lougheed continues to rely on the foundation built during his time with the Grey Bruce Highlanders. His advice to current Highlanders players is simple but powerful: “Focus on the process. Not every day is going to be great. As long as you stay positive, focused, and try to improve a little bit each and every day, good things will happen. None of that comes if you're not willing to put in the work.”

Looking back, Lougheed is confident in the role the Highlanders played in shaping his path. “The effort and care that the organization shows is huge, and there are great people in and around the program. In my experience, I know that I would not be the person or player that I've become without the Highlanders program.”

Marcus' journey is a testament to hard work, character, and the power of development done the right way.

Congratulations on your success, Marcus!
