On September 8th, the
Grey Bruce Highlanders started their skills program in a slightly different way
than usual. While the skills program has
become a staple of the Highlanders program over the last few years, the goalie
position has received less attention than the position warrants. Last year the organization developed a new
goalie development policy and decided to kick this season off with a special
goalie skills session.
With the help of the organization’s goalie coach Matt McGahey our staff received helpful hints and a manual of drills to better help our goalies move forward in every practice.
Our goalies also enjoyed the evening as Matt moved them through a variety of drills challenging their fitness and decision making. The evening helped everyone to see the importance of this unique position and the competitive advantage that can be gleaned by developing all of our players including our goaltenders. Additionally, our coaches began the session with an introductory session from our Coach Mentor Brian Warrilow and 2nd Vice-President Hugh Morrison about trying to find as many ways as possible to help our players get 2% better!
