Garb and Gear Grey-Bruce Highlanders AAA Midgets Kick Off 2013-2014 Hockey Season

The Garb and Gear Grey-Bruce Highlanders AAA Major Midgets kicked off their 2013-2014 hockey season on September 27 when the participated in the Toronto Titans tournament.  This season marks the first year that the OMHA is allowing players to play for any OMHA team without requiring a release from their home centre.  It is too early in the season to determine the impact of this experiment on league parity so we will have to wait and see.  Early indications would suggest that the Garb and Gear Grey-Bruce Highlanders AAA Midgets (current record of 5-2-1) will be very competitive.

Their first challenge of the season was at the Toronto Titans 2nd Annual Major Midget Tournament.  Even with a round robin record of 3-1 (wins over host Toronto Titans (4-3), Mississauga Senators (2-1) and North Bay Trappers (6-2) and a loss to London Knights (3-1)) they did not have enough of a goal differential to advance to the play-off round.  Four teams with 3-1 records were assessed based on goal differentials for three wild-card spots and the Highlanders were the odd team out.    Disappointing on the one hand yet encouraging that this team is capable of beating any team.

For the Garb and Gear Midgets, league play began on October 5 in Flesherton when the hometown Highlanders hosted the Guelph Jr. Gryphons in their home opener.  After a slow start  Grey-Bruce improved their play as the game progressed and came away with a solid 8-2 victory.  Scoring for the Highlanders were Ben Van Ooteghem (3), Brady Anderson (2), Ethan Skinner, Trevor Nevidomskis and Andrew Turnbull.  Nick Redman was in goal for the victory.

Coming off the emotional high from a home opener victory, the Midgets travelled to Oakville to take on the much touted Rangers.  After jumping out to a 2-0 league they let the Rangers score 3 unanswered goals and left the rink with a disappointing 3-2 loss.  Scoring for the Highlanders were Van Ooteghem and Turnbull.  Tyler Fassl took the loss in goal stopping 17 of the 20 shots he faced.

With a week for the coaches to work out the bugs, the Highlanders hosted Burlington.  This affair saw the visiting Eagles take a 3-1 lead into the third only to give it all back and then some. With 45 seconds left in the game and the goalie pulled, Burlington scored to knot the game at 4.  Scoring for the Highlanders were Skinner (2), Anderson and Nevidomskis.  Redman faced 19 shots in the knotted affair.  With that awful feeling that they let a point slip away the previous day, the Midgets made their way down the QEW to take on the Falcons from St. Catherines determined to not let the previous game’s misfortune impact them.  Early on it looked promising with the Highlanders dominating the play and scoring midway through the first.  The score stayed that way for 40 minutes until midway through the 3rd when they increased their lead to 2-0.  With several quality scoring chances and outshooting the Falcons 53 to 19, the Midgets were frustrated that they could not solve the Falcon goalie.  Nevertheless they squeaked out a 2-1 victory, recording 2 points in the process.  Scoring for the Highlanders were Kyle Betts and Skinner.  Tyler Fassl recorded the win in goal.

The Midgets next action will be in the Ottawa Senators Midget AAA tournament the weekend of October 17-20 where they will face the Ottawa Valley Titans, Toronto Jr. Canadians, Clarington Toros and the North Bay Trappers.   Their next regular season home game is Sunday, November 4 when they once again face the Burlington Eagles.
