Deer Season Gets Underway
What day of the year do you think the number of sick calls skyrockets up in Bruce County?
The day to start the cold and flu season?
The day after Thursday night bowling league?
How about the opening day of deer season?
With hunting on their minds your Scandinave Grey Bruce Minor Bantam Highlanders took to the ice , not to harvest a deer, but an eagle. The Burlington Eagles came to Big Bruce Arena to try their luck with a hot as a pistol Highlander team.

Coming off a couple of big wins, including a win against the Guelph Gryphons last weekend, the red and white were looking to continue the streak. Give the Guelph squad credit last week, they came out rough and tough, but in the end the Highlanders would pump 4 slugs into the back of the Guelph net to blank the Gryphons 4-0.

On Saturday the Highlanders would have the Eagles in their sights. Burlington came out crashing and banging. It seemed to be their strategy. Did it faze the home team? Nah, like pushing deer through a cornfield, the Minor Bantams kept up their meticulous game plan. It wasn’t flashy but it was successful. When the final siren would sound the score would show 3 for the home team and 1 for the Eagles.

The Sunday game had the team put a hold on hunting. Guns were locked back up in the cabinets and the gas tanks were filled in preparation of a trip down to Oakville. As the grey skies of Grey and Bruce County gave way to sunshine in the city, the players and parents would wonder how the Highlanders would match up against one of the top teams. Since they beat Oakville a few weeks prior the team seemed to enjoy a little confidence. Unfortunately it was a slow start. For the first period and a half the Highlanders were asleep in their deer stands. Opportunity after opportunity presented itself and the visitors missed every shot. 1-0 for Oakville at the start of the third was when GBH finally got going. Outshooting the Rangers by a wide margin in the last period, Grey-Bruce fired round after round at the Oakland net. The Ranger goalie was spectacular and kicked out shot after shot. Grey-Bruce would throw everything except the kitchen sink at the net in the last 5 minutes but it was to no avail. The Ranger netminder was up to the challenge and the Oakville squad would shut out the visitors 1-0.
