Pee Wee Highlanders Drop Two in Weekend Action
written by:  The Trainer

With the holidays now over, and the last turkey sandwich finally eaten, it was time to get back to business and carry on with the second half of the season. And what better way to get back into it than with two weekend games against the league’s top two teams.

Saturday night in Steel Town had the Highlanders on the ice against the Hamilton JR Bulldogs. Despite some occasional strong play by the visitors this game was as fun to watch as a dog skidding across the living room carpet. Not pretty and a bad result as it was the Grey Bruce Poodles that went home licking their wounds after being shut out.
Final score Bulldogs-3 Poodles-0

Game 2 was back at home at the downtown Chesley arena against the Oakville Rangers. After handing the Rangers a loss last week the Highlanders knew they would be in tough today. Both teams came out swinging and the first ended scoreless.

Captain Derek Cornfield got the good guys on the board early in the second with a laser shot from the point that bounced twice and ended up behind the Oakville net minder. Assists went to Connor Roberts and Hayden Coulter. The Rangers would tie it soon after and Roberts would then squeak a shot past the goalie’s skate and the post to put the Scandinave Grey Bruce Highlanders back in the lead.

The third period was very even and the Highlanders seemed to be in control but two lucky bounces off of skates in front of the Grey Bruce net put the Rangers in front for good. Lady luck was not on the Highlander’s side this afternoon. Not accustomed to losing two in a row, the players vowed to work hard in practice this week and be ready for next weekend.

Final score: Rangers-3 Red and White-2
Next game: Jan 19 doubleheader in Halton
