Winning Weekend for the Garb & Gear Source for Sports Minor Midgets
The Garb & Gear Source for Sports Minor Midgets earn four points over weekend play against opponents Niagara North and the Halton Hurricanes

The Highlanders took to the ice Saturday January 7th in Chesley against the Niagara North team.  Reid Simmons (Hepworth) opened the scoring for the Minor Midgets with his power play goal midway through the 1st period, assisted by Braden Boley (Owen Sound).  Kyle Hunter (Grand Valley) increased the home team’s lead just over a minute later, assisted by Colin Rigney (Singhampton) and Ben Scheel (Kincardine).  Grey Bruce ended the period with a score of 3 to 0 after Simmons scored his second of the game, assisted by Connor Shaw (Elmwood).

Niagara kept the Highlanders off the scoreboard in the 2nd period until Keegan McLelland (Kincardine) scored with 5:38 left, on a nice passing play from Boley.  Niagara ruined Cam Harron’s (Shelburne) shutout when they scored with 2:58 left in the 2nd

Niagara came out strong in the 3rd but neither team were able to add to their score and the game ended with  a 4 to 1 win for the Highlanders.

The Garb & Gear Source for Sports crew loaded up and headed to the Powerade Centre on Sunday to take on the 3rd place team in the SCTA, the Halton Hurricanes.  The Highlanders carried the play for most of the 1st period but were unable to find the back the Hurricane net.  The Minor Midgets kept up the pressure in the 2nd and were the first on the scoreboard on a Boley goal, just under 5 minutes into the period, assisted by Simmons.  With the seconds winding down in the 2nd, Quinten Bruce (Grand Valley) was denied a goal on his breakaway, but McLelland capitalized on the rebound, scoring the Highlanders 2nd goal with just 0:01 left in the period.

The Hurricanes lived up to their name and came out strong in the 3rd, scoring their 1st goal of the game at 4:34 into the period.  The Highlanders weathered the storm and Brady Richards, assisted by Boley and Simmons, scored the final goal of the game with 3:21 left in the period, to skate away with the win and a final score of 3 to 1.

Malcolm Young (Orangeville) played very well for Grey Bruce, including stopping a penalty shot in the 2nd period.

Next up for the minor midgets are 2 home games next weekend, Saturday January 4th at 4:00 in Chesley and Sunday January 5th at 4:30 in Markdale, both games against the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs.
