From uncounted goals to a goal scored after the whistle, the Garb & Gear Source for Sports Minor Midgets return to Grey Bruce with another victory. It was a beautiful sunny day for a Sunday drive to the Niagara Region to take on the Niagara North team at the Sportsplex in St. Catharines. It was a back and forth game for both teams and the refs made it interesting for everyone in the stands for the whole 45 minutes of play.
The Highlanders were the first on the scoreboard in the 1st period with Kyle Hunter’s goal, assisted by Josh Hopkin and Quinten Bruce. Niagara North tied it up on a power play goal with 5:53 left in the 1st. 27 seconds later, Grey Bruce went ahead on Brady Richards goal, assisted by Connor Shaw. Niagara were able to score one more before the period was over to tie it up at 2 a piece going into the 2nd.
Niagara North took their first lead of the game on a goal 5 minutes into the 2nd period. Grey Bruce were able to regain the lead with 2 goals, Colin Rigney, assisted by Keegan McLelland and Robert White, and Ben Scheel from Reid Simmons and Braden Boley. The Niagara team score with 7:35 remaining in the 2nd to force another tie to start the 3rd period.
3rd period action included 2 more Highlander goals, Boley from Scheel and Rigney, and McLelland from Richards and Shaw. With a penalty late in the game, and with the Niagara goalie pulled, the home team were able to score a goal with 1:07 left in the game. Grey Bruce were able to win the game with a score of 6 to 5. In net for Grey Bruce was Malcolm Young who was able to stop 18 of 23 shots.
