Stephens Equipment Bantam Highlanders Split Games Over the Weekend
On Saturday Dec 17th the Stephens Equipment Highlanders hosted the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs at the Markdale Arena in a 2:00 pm stint.  It was a fast paced game with a lot of close checking, but only a few penalties called.

At the 6:00 mark of the first period, Spencer Elder (Owen Sound) kept the puck in the Hamilton zone, getting the puck to Ethan Skinner (Kincardine) where he had a lane from the left boards to the Bulldogs goal. As Skinner closed in on the net he fired a shot, the puck squeezing through the goalie and post to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. At 3:06 the Bulldogs scored when they retrieved the puck from behind the Highlanders’ net and set up one of their own players in the slot for the tying goal. The second period saw Caleb Stephens (Collingwood) take a hit at centre ice which ended up with the hitter being bowled over. Keeping the puck Stephens skated into the Hamilton end to snap off a shot from the top of the left face-off circle that beat the Bulldogs goalie on the glove side to restore the lead for the Stephens Equipment team at 11:08. At 4:53 Ben Van Ooteghem intercepted a cross-ice pass at the Highlanders’ blue-line and raced off down the ice on a break-away. After being stopped on his initial shot, Van Ooteghem picked up the loose puck and circled around behind the net to stuff it in from the other side past the sliding Bulldogs goaltender to open up a 3-1 lead that held up for the rest of the game. Goalie Tyler Fassl came up with some great saves on re-directed shots for the remaining minutes of the game to keep the Hamilton team from getting back into the game.

On Sunday The Stephens Equipment crew travelled down to the South Fletchers Sportsplex to play the Brampton Battalion for a 6:45 pm game. The first period started off at a fast pace with both teams skating hard, and few whistles making for a quick period. Before the end of the period, Logan Davidson fore-checked the Brampton defenseman in the Battalion’s corner, freeing up the puck for Tyler Rolfe (Shelburne) who skated out of the corner and patiently waited for the goalie to go down while he picked the top shelf to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead at 2:37. The second period ended up being a penalty filled stretch as the ref felt the need to hand out a few to both teams. At 10:06 on one of the man-advantages, Brampton scored with 2 seconds left in the penalty to tie things up at 1-1. The third started off slowly for the Highlanders and that came back to bite them as at 11:58 Brampton scored to take a 2-1 lead. During another stretch of penalty-filled hockey Brampton got a lucky break in a 4-on-4 situation when a shot from the point deflected off a Highlander skate and eluded Nick Redman’s (Collingwood) right pad to give the Battalion a 3-1 lead. The goalie played a solid game in net, coming up with some big saves on some re-directed shots. At 3:18 the Highlanders scored while short-handed when some aggressive penalty killing forced the Brampton defense to give up the puck in a clearing attempt. Jordan Vanhaelemeesch (Saugeen Shores) kept the puck inside the blue line and sent it into the corner where Ethan Skinner (Kincardine) went to the net and beat the goalie to make it a 3-2 score. Brendan Welsh (Owen Sound) also assisted on the play. A penalty late in the game hampered any comeback bid the Highlanders may have made as the Battalion went on to win 3-2.

The Stephens Equipment gang plays next in the Toronto Marlboro Holiday Classic Tournament during the Christmas break, starting with an 11:05 match on Dec 27th against the Buffalo Regals.
