Memorable Inaugural Season For Scandinave Minor PeeWees
It is hard to believe that it has almost been a year since the Scandinave Minor PeeWees hit the ice in Durham to begin their AAA quest. Lat weekend, the team traveled to Welland to compete in the SCTA Qualifier Tournament and leave it all on the ice.

In game #1, the Highlanders would do battle with the Halton Hurricanes. The team hit the ice with a vengance and took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Connor Roberts. The helper went to Derrick Cornfield. Trevor Donaldson would give the boys a 2-1 lead as they entered the third frame. Justin Marlowe and Leif McFadden recorded the assists. The team continued to play an aggressive game but a quick goal by the Hurricanes would even the score. With only a few minutes left, Halton would sneak in the eventual game winner and take game #1 by a 3-2 margin.
In game #2, the team knew they would be in for an intense contest with the Big Dogs from Hamilton. The boys did  not back down from the crew from Steeltown. Unfortunately for the Highlander squad, this was the first game of the day for the "Dogs" and they eventually wore down the boys in Black and Red. When the buzzer rang, Hamilton had defeated the boys by a 6-0 score.
The next morning, the team was buzzing as they were anxious to avenge a 2-1 loss to the Brampton Battalion in the semi-finals at the Lindsay Tournament one month earlier. The Battalion squad was energized right out of the gate as they built an early 3-0 lead. Hayden Coulter got the boys back in the contest with a much needed goal with the help of his linemates Roberts and Cederberg. The Battalion responded immediately with 2 more to take a convincing 5-1 lead. At this point, the boys could have threw in the towel and call it a season but to their credit, they demonstrated great pride and resiliency. Sean O'Donnell scored on a power play to narrow the gap to 3 goals after a great feed from Derrick Cornfield. Connor Roberts made it a 5-3 game when he scored unassisted. To make things extremely interesting, Brayden McKenzie scored to narrow the gap to 1 goal. Justin Marlowe chipped in with the helper. The boys continued to press but could not secure the equalizer. It was an entertaining game and it showed how far the team progressed during the year.
In game #4, the team would lock horns with the first place Oakville Rangers. This would be a physical affair and the Highlanders stood up to the challenge. Once again they found themselves playing a well rested team as they recovered from a dramatic comeback in the morning. The Rangers proved to be a little too much on this Saturday afternoon as they defeated the boys by a score of 6-1. Brendan Cederberg recorded the lone goal with help from Leif McFadden and Trevor Donaldson.
From the goaltending tandem of Malachai Albrect and Lucas Pfeil, to the "D" corp and all the forwards, the boys truly did leave it all on the ice this past weekend. Well done boys!!
On behalf of players and their parents, I would like to thank the coaching staff(Tom,Rob,Dan,Josh,Mark,Ted) for their dedication and direction this season. Coaching can often be a thankless job.
I would also like to say thanks to Angie VanWyck in her role as team Treasurer. No doubt she she accounted for every penny.I hope she is doing your company's books Doug!! I would also like to thank Scott Thede for his meticulous handling of the game stats. It certainly made my job easier. Tom, if you ever have trouble sleeping at night, just peruse the stats. A sure cure for insomnia!! I would also like to thank Scott Buehlow for taking on the role of Parent Rep. Just think Scott: If we knew it was going to be this warm so soon, we could have ordered Capris for the players and parents for the year end tournament. Of course, no Khakis for Bert !!
Let us not forget our gracious sponsor Scandinave at Blue Mountain or as us local folks say, Spa Sandinave.
All kidding aside, this has been an incredible journey for these first year AAA players and their extended families.
This group competed game after game. Each player is a better hockey player and a better young man as a result of their affiliation with the Highlander organization. The mutual respect and levity between our parent group made many other teams in our league envious of this cohesive unit.
As we all know, the hockey season really never ends. With tryouts quickly on the horizon, our paths will surely cross again. Good luck to all! "Go Highlanders!!"
Signing off,
