Like the dictionary L must come before W.
On November 4th, the Garb and Gear Source for Sports Midgets journeyed to Guelph for their first meeting of the regular season; unfortunately, some left over Halloween haunting seemed to follow them.
The match started out with the Midgets dominating the ice
rewarding them with a goal in the first, scored by Justin Graham (Shelburne)
from Liam Francis (Mt. Forest) and another in the second, by Brandon Eagles
(Meaford) who was unassisted. Guelph
jumped into the game and scored their first before the second period ended
making it 2-1.
Enter the third and that is when things got paranormal with
two unexplained pucks finding their way into the Highlander net. With the game 3-2
for Guelph, the Highlanders fought back and Reid Simmons (Hepworth) from Josh
Perdue (Port Elgin) tied it up at 3’s. Flash forward two minutes and Guelph
managed to put their fourth through the blue paint and over the goal line. Strong
effort by Grey Bruce failed to materialize another goal and when the buzzer
sounded, the Midgets found themselves suffering the agony of defeat.
On November 11th, the Midget Highlanders faced
off in Chesley against the Burlington Eagles, the only other team to hand the
Garb and Gear Source for Sports Midgets a loss.
After a moment of silence to honour our fallen Soldiers who made the
ultimate sacrifice, the puck was dropped and the game was on. Things looked bleak when Burlington scored 50
seconds into the opening period. It quickly became apparent that the Midget
Highlanders took little notice of the Burlington goal when their returning
salvo resulted in three goals in the first period. These points came from Josh Perdue (Port
Elgin) assisted by Quinten Bruce (Grand Valley) and Liam Francis (Mt. Forest), Colin
Rigney (Singhampton) assisted by Justin Graham (Shelburne) and Ben Scheel
(Kincardine) and Justin Graham unassisted.
Period two was put into the books with either team managing
to find the back of the mesh and so it was onto the third. Josh Perdue decided
to add a little buffer to the score when he made it 4-1 with an unassisted
goal. Burlington tried to make it
respectable when they added a second point but this was quickly matched by
Jamison Buck AP (Collingwood) from Brandon Eagles (Meaford) and Garrett
McFadden AP (Kincardine) to end the game with a 5-2 Highlander win, moving
their season to 8 and 2.
The team was quick to thank both their goaltenders, Malcolm
Young (Orangeville) and Tibor Svitek (Guelph) who continue to impress with
their tireless play between the pipes.
